Welcome to the Counselor's Corner
My name is Laura Betz Burch and I have been the School Counselor at Saddlebrook since the 2017-2018 school year. I support students, teachers and parents by helping our students be the best that they can be. I offer drop in sessions, individual counseling and group counseling. This year our groups are Strong Start and Zones of Regulation. I also teach a guidance class as a special which means I see each class once every 10 days for 50 minutes. I am responsible for the many philanthropy projects and drives that happen at our school such as the Pop Tab drive. I am the SAT coordinator, and assist with 504s, MTSS-B and am one of the Microsoft Educators for our school. I also have been a coach for Girls on the Run for the last two years.
I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Western Washington University in the beautiful seaside town of Bellingham Washington 20 minutes south of the Canadian border and a few hours north of Seattle where I grew up. I then moved cross country to Knoxville Tennessee and received a Master of Science in School Counseling and met my now husband while working on a farm. I was a school counselor back in Seattle for a year before moving to Omaha to be with my husband. When I am not at work I am usually growing plants, traveling with our school librarian Ms. Steele, or being active outside.
The Pre-K -12 Guidance and Counseling Program
The Omaha Public Schools have a Pre-K-12 comprehensive, competency-based guidance and counseling program. This program is both proactive and responsive to the unique needs of individual students. There are four components of the program:
*A Guidance Curriculum that is delivered to ALL students and emphasizes personal, occupational, and academic skill-building through classroom presentations.
*Individual Student Planning that developmentally helps students plan for their future, set career goals, manage conflict, prepare for learning beyond high school, strengthen academic skills, and more.
* Response Services that provide support for issues of immediate concern to the students and their families.
*System Support that recognizes the school counselor as part of the school team and supports the other three components.
